Frequently Asked Questions

RWANDA WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Booking & Payment

How much does the workshop cost, and what is included?

The Rwanda Wildlife Photography Workshop is priced at $6,500 USD per person for seven days and six nights.

The experience includes accommodation, scheduled safari activities, park entrance fees and planned gorilla and golden monkey trekking permits, ground transportation throughout the itinerary, professional guiding, photography coaching, editing sessions, and meals as specified in the program.

Not included: international flights, Rwanda visa fees, alcoholic or separately charged beverages, personal expenses, and optional gratuities for lodge staff and guides.

How does the deposit payment work?

A $4,000 USD deposit per person is required to secure your seat on the workshop.

The remaining balance of $2,500 USD is due 90 days before your arrival in Rwanda.

Your reservation will be confirmed once your deposit has been received and your booking has been accepted.

Only six photographers can join this exclusive experience.

What happens if I need to cancel my booking?

Cancellation fees and refund eligibility depend on the booking terms and the timing of your cancellation.

Because this workshop involves advance reservations, luxury accommodation, and limited trekking permits, we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes trip cancellation coverage.

The applicable cancellation policy will be provided before your reservation is confirmed.

Do I need travel insurance?

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, evacuation, trip cancellation, delays, and photographic equipment.

Make sure your insurance covers gorilla trekking and the other activities included in the itinerary.

Gorillas & Wildlife

How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. Treks can range from relatively short walks to several hours of hiking through steep, muddy, and uneven rainforest terrain.

The difficulty depends on where the gorilla family is located on the day of your visit.

Porters are generally available to assist with bags and provide support during the trek for an additional fee.

We recommend preparing with regular walking and hiking before your adventure.

How close will we get to the mountain gorillas?

Gorilla trekking offers an extraordinary opportunity to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Visitors are generally required to maintain a minimum distance of 10 meters from the gorillas, following the instructions of park rangers.

Once a gorilla family is located, visitors are normally allowed up to one hour observing them.

The gorillas are completely wild, and their movements and behavior cannot be controlled.

Are the gorilla and golden monkey encounters safe?

All trekking activities are conducted under the supervision of experienced park rangers and professional guides.

Guests must follow ranger instructions, maintain the required distance from wildlife, and avoid sudden movements or behavior that could disturb the animals.

Although encounters are carefully managed, these are wild animals and no wildlife activity is entirely without risk.

What wildlife can we expect in Akagera National Park?

Akagera is home to an impressive diversity of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and numerous bird species.

The park is also home to lions, leopards, and both black and white rhinoceroses.

Our game drives will provide opportunities to explore its savannas, woodlands, wetlands, and lakes while searching for wildlife.

All wildlife sightings are unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.

Photography Experience

Do I need to be an experienced photographer?

Not at all! Our workshop welcomes photographers of different experience levels.

Whether you're discovering wildlife photography or already have years of experience, you'll receive personalized coaching adapted to your skills.

With only six photographers, the experience allows plenty of opportunities for individual guidance.

What camera equipment should I bring?

We recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a versatile telephoto lens for wildlife photography.

A 70–200mm or 100–400mm lens can be particularly useful for gorilla and golden monkey photography, while longer focal lengths can be valuable for wildlife in Akagera.

Bring spare batteries, memory cards, rain protection, chargers, and sufficient storage for your photographs.

Flash photography is not permitted during gorilla trekking.

Can my husband, wife, or non-photographer partner join?

Absolutely! Non-photographer partners are welcome to join and enjoy the extraordinary wildlife encounters, beautiful scenery, and luxury accommodations.

They can participate in the safari and trekking activities without needing to take part in photography coaching.

Each accompanying guest requires their own reserved place and is subject to the same per-person workshop price and booking conditions.

Travel & Accommodation

Where will we stay during the workshop?

Our carefully selected accommodations combine comfort, exceptional hospitality, and proximity to Rwanda's remarkable wildlife destinations.

Kigali: Kigali Marriott Hotel
Akagera National Park: Ruzizi Tented Lodge
Volcanoes National Park: Wilderness Sabyinyo

Accommodation is planned on a shared basis and is subject to final booking confirmation and availability.

How do we travel between the parks?

All planned ground transfers are arranged as part of the workshop.

We'll travel from Kigali to Akagera National Park, return to Kigali after our stay, and then continue to Volcanoes National Park.

The journey from Kigali to the Volcanoes region generally takes approximately three hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

These journeys are a wonderful opportunity to discover Rwanda's beautiful landscapes.

What will the weather be like in September?

September is a transitional month in Rwanda, with generally pleasant temperatures and the possibility of rain as the wetter season approaches.

Akagera is usually warmer, while Volcanoes National Park is cooler and can be misty or wet, particularly in the forest.

We recommend preparing for a variety of weather conditions, including sunshine, cooler mornings, and occasional heavy showers.

What clothing should I bring?

We recommend comfortable safari clothing, lightweight layers, a warm jacket or fleece, waterproof outerwear, and sturdy hiking boots with good grip.

For gorilla trekking, long trousers, long sleeves, gardening-style gloves, and gaiters or long socks can help protect against mud, vegetation, and insects.

Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, and rain protection for your camera equipment.

Do I need vaccinations or a visa to visit Rwanda?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Rwanda offers visas on arrival to many international travellers, but guests should confirm the requirements for their passport before departure.

Yellow fever vaccination requirements depend on your country of departure and travel history, including transit through certain countries.

Other vaccinations and malaria prevention may be recommended depending on your individual circumstances.

Please consult a travel health professional and verify current entry requirements with the Rwandan authorities before travelling.

Rwanda visa fees are not included in the workshop price.

What happexns on the final day, and when should I book my return flight?

On our final morning, we'll enjoy a golden monkey trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park.

After the trek, we'll prepare for departure and return to Kigali, with airport drop-off planned for the afternoon.

We recommend booking an evening international departure whenever possible, allowing sufficient time for the road transfer, airport check-in, and any unexpected delays.

Guests joining our Tanzania photography extension will receive separate onward travel arrangements.
