Lion's roar - African Wildlife Photography Print
The Story Behind the Photo
Embarking on a conservation project in South Africa I encountered this majestic white Lion named Sam and I felt so lucky to be able to approach him in this reserve.
This Lion was initially smuggled out of South Africa and was about to be sold on the black market to China. Fortunately the operation was caught at the airport of O.R Tambo in Johannesburg and this Lion was then relocated in this reserve to have a suitable environment.
White Lions are extremely rare in the wild and only represent 1% of the Lion's population. They are not albinos, they simply have a different amount of melanin due to a genetic mutation. This rarity make them very sought and therefore they are subject to a lot of traffic and captivity reproduction.
