Discover the Magic of a Dhow Cruise in Kilifi, Kenya

Nestled along the pristine coast of Kenya, Kilifi is a hidden gem that offers breathtaking landscapes, and relaxed culture. One of the most enchanting experiences you can have in this coastal paradise is embarking on a dhow cruise. These traditional wooden boats, with their distinctive lateen sails, provide a unique way to explore the beauty of the Indian Ocean and the Kilifi Creek. Here’s everything you need to know about getting on a dhow cruise in Kilifi, Kenya.

What is a Dhow?

A dhow is a traditional sailing vessel with a long history in the Indian Ocean, dating back to ancient times. Originally used for trading along the East African coast, the Arabian Peninsula, and South Asia, these boats are now primarily used for fishing and tourism. Their iconic triangular sails and elegant design make them a charming and picturesque sight on the water.

Why Choose a Dhow Cruise?

  1. Authentic Experience: A dhow cruise offers a glimpse into the ocean heritage of the Swahili coast. It's a journey through time, allowing you to experience the same waters that ancient traders once navigated.

  2. Scenic Beauty: Kilifi’s coastline is renowned for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush mangroves. From the deck of a dhow, you can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean, the Kilifi Creek, and the surrounding landscapes.

  3. Relaxation: The gentle sway of the dhow, combined with the soothing sounds of the waves, creates a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. It's the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

  4. Wildlife: Kilifi's waters are teeming with marine life. During your cruise, you might spot dolphins, sea turtles, and a variety of fish. Bird enthusiasts will also appreciate the diverse species especially the Carmine Bee Eaters at sunsets coming by hundreds and making a show.

Planning Your Dhow Cruise

1. Choose Your Cruise: We went of a cruise with Captain Marcelo, and everything was perfectly planned. He offers a wide range of different cruises from day long trips to sunset cruises.

  • Sunset Cruises: Ideal for couples and romantics, these cruises offer spectacular views of the sun setting over the Indian Ocean.
  • Day Cruises: Perfect for families and groups, these longer cruises provide ample time for snorkeling, swimming, and exploring the Kilifi Creek.
  • Dinner Cruises: Enjoy a delicious meal on board as you sail under the starlit sky.

2. Book in Advance: While it’s possible to book a dhow cruise on the day of your trip, it’s recommended to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. This ensures you secure a spot and allows for any special requests or arrangements. Pop them a message on Instagram or contact them by whatsapp here : +254 794 251219

3. What to Bring:

  • Sunscreen: The African sun can be intense, so protect your skin with a high-SPF sunscreen. We got sunburned badly.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: Essential for shielding your face and eyes from the sun.
  • Camera: Capture the stunning scenery and memorable moments.
  • Swimsuit and Towel: If you plan to swim or snorkel, bring appropriate gear.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Light, breathable fabrics are ideal for the warm weather.

During the Cruise

  • Explore Kilifi Creek: This beautiful estuary is lined with mangroves and offers calm, sheltered waters perfect for a leisurely sail. Look out for all the bird species that call this area home.
  • Lunch on a white sand beach : They planned our lunch with so much food to eat we could have never finished it all. They also planned with me being vegetarian.
  • Snorkeling and Swimming: Enjoy to swim in the creek at high tide for sunset. And watch the magical carmine bee eaters fly by hundreds to next in the mangrove.
  • Bioluminescence: We then stayed longer and they sailed us in a specfic area of the creek after sunset with bioluminescence. As you swim around they light up like fairy light in the dark water.

Enjoying the Experience

One of the best parts of a dhow cruise is simply sitting back and soaking in the experience. The rhythmic motion of the boat, the sound of the wind in the sails, and the breathtaking scenery combine to create an unforgettable adventure. Whether you're sipping on a refreshing drink, taking photos, or just enjoying the company of fellow travelers, a dhow cruise in Kilifi is sure to be a highlight of your visit to Kenya.

Conclusion

A dhow cruise in Kilifi, Kenya, is more than just a boat ride; it's a journey into the heart of East Africa's coastal beauty and heritage. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or a deeper connection with nature and culture, this experience offers something for everyone. So, next time you find yourself in Kilifi, don't miss the opportunity to set sail on a dhow and create memories that will last a lifetime.
